Question: How did the Royals do before and after Mike Aviles (.325/.354/.480) became the regular starter in stead of Tony Pena (.169 /.189/.209) at shortstop for the Royals?
Why I asked the question: Actually firesticks from the the Royals forum at Scout.com asked the question:
“Any idea what the run differential was from June to the end of the season? Basically when Aviles became the starter? I think that'd give us a better idea seeing as Pena was sooooooo bad.”
I took up his challenge to find out how much he helped the team
Analysis: On June 6th Mike became the regular starter and here is the Royals record before and after that point.
| Actual Record | Percent | RS | RA | Percent | Projection PythagreonRecord for the season using RS and RA
|
Until Jun 6th (60 games) | 23-37 | 0.383 | 218 | 281 | 0.376 | 61-100 |
After June 6th (102 games) | 52-50 | 0.510 | 473 | 500 | 0.472 | 77-85 |
It definitely looked like a different team comparing them before and after that point. The turn around might not all have been because Aviles replacing Pena, but looks to definitely be part of the change.
