Question: Did Jorge De La Rosa have too much motion on his pitches and
being on the Colorado Rockies limits his movement there by having better
control?
Why I asked the question: Every time I saw De La Rosa pitch, he seemed
to have too much movement on his pitches and was unable to throw them
consistently for strikes. After being trade this spring to Colorado, it seems
that he pitched a lot better. In Colorado, the ball doesn't break that much
because of the thin air. I just wanted to compare his stats in Colorado's
thin air and away from it
Analysis: Jorge's home and away splits for the 2008 season:
| G | W | L | IP | ERA | H | R | BB | SO |
HOME | 15 | 6 | 2 | 71.2 | 4.65 | 73 | 38 | 29 | 66 |
AWAY | 13 | 4 | 6 | 58.1 | 5.25 | 55 | 39 | 33 | 62 |
With this small sample, it looks like he pitches better in Colorado. I
decided to compare his lifetime stats to those games when he pitched at
Coors field over his career:
| G | W | L | IP | ERA | H | R | BB | SO |
Colorado | 17 | 6 | 2 | 78 | 4.50 | 79 | 40 | 30 | 68 |
Lifetime | 125 | 25 | 31 | 404.0 | 5.55 | 446 | 267 | 221 | 324 |
Again, it looks like he definitely does better at Colorado, vice being away
from it. The sample set of 17 games pitched is quite small, but Colorado
should definitely give him a chance . They could try to manipulate their rotation
so he can pitch at home as much as possible.
